When Aquilo caught my eye with a grin, I knew that he understood the game.

My shadows thrummed with joy, as Aquilo and I strolled either side of Vala, the Alpha princess. Wind whooshed around Aquilo like he was the eye of the storm. His hair whipped across his ice-blue eyes.

I cocked my head, studying the board. This wasn’t chess or a fantasy war game: it was battle plans. Who was Vala intending to conquer?

“A black hat to represent a witch, seriously?” I tutted. “I resent the witchaphobia.”

Vala clacked her golden claws against the table. “What’s that? Fear of witches?”

Aquilo leaned over the board. “Then what’s fear of mages?”

A breeze shot from the tips of his fingers, sweeping the pieces flying like the wolves who my great-grandmother had controlled in the Wolf War. The mages gaped at him in admiration.

“Oops.” Aquilo ran his hand through his hair with affected boredom, “My mother always did say that I was deplorably clumsy.”

Vala yowled in outrage, raising her claws to swipe across Aquilo’s cheek. I blocked her, snatching a bottle off the table and squeezing.

Chocolate sauce squirted over Vala’s shocked face. It was almost as satisfying as squirting the sauce onto Moon, my Omega, would’ve been. If it’d been Moon, however, I’d have been able to fulfil my fantasy of licking it off…

“I love you, Violet.” The vampire’s pupils were blown, and his gaze was desperate. “I know that you don’t want my protection.” He kissed my neck; his large hands stroked up my spine. “But just once…pretend. I’m not a hero but I could be—"

“I don’t need to pretend.” I caressed Ash’s bare chest, and his wings fluttered.

When my fingers moved towards the waistband of Ash’s jeans, however, his breath hitched.

“How can you touch me?” He rested his head on my shoulder. “When you know what I am?”

“You’re mine.” If Lucifer killed us tonight, at least we died claimed and together. “You’re family and the Brigadier. No one can take that away.”

I pushed open the button on his jeans, and although his breathing became harsh, he didn’t stop me this time.
